What does chocolate do to our brain?

Chocolate is a sugar-rich food and sugar is a fast source of energy for our cells. The brain uses sugar as its main source of energy. In fact, 20% of the total sugar present in our body is consumed by our brain. Here at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), our mission is to understand how the cells’ energy factories – the mitochondria – present in our brain use sugar as a source of energy to regulate communication between neurons. We also seek to understand the metabolic mechanisms that lead to the healthy functioning of our brain.
