Why do we have arthritis?
Arthritis causes pain and deformation in the joints and over time suffering and disability. There are several types of arthritis with the most known being rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Even now we do not know why people have arthritis. It is a multifactorial process involving genes, infectious and chemical agents. However, we know clearly that if we treat early and with the exact drugs, we can influence the evolution of the disease and prevent suffering and disability. Each day at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) we are closer to know the personalised way each of us develops arthritis.
