The new project NOSTRESS, approved in the framework of P2020, is focused on increasing the welfare and production of fish farming.

The exposure to stress situations and pathogens inherent to cultivation processes result in significant losses of marine fishes at the first ages, resulting in a decreased production efficiency. To change this reality, the NOSTRESS project will investigate and develop a new functional additive with bioactive properties and fortified foods to reduce stress-related losses of marine fish larvae and juveniles, mainly focusing on sea bass.

The project is primarily based on previous work done by Miguel Castanho Lab at iMM, which has been focusing its research on the activity of a biologic neuropeptide tyrosyl-arginine, already demonstrated that modified versions of the peptide have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and anti-nociceptive (analgesic) properties.

This innovative solution is presented by a consortium coordinated by SPAROS, SME developing nutritional solutions for farmed fish, and the partners iMM, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL), Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR) and Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA).

This work is part of project NOSTRESS_047122 supported by Portugal and the European Union through FEDER, LISBOA 2020, NORTE 2020 and CRESC Algarve 2020, in the framework of Portugal 2020.
