PhD Training

We seek to recruit exceptionally motivated and committed students and empower them with the knowledge and skills to successfully face the challenges and complexity of cutting edge biomedical and clinical research.

The majority of the iMM PhD students belong to the Lisbon AMC PhD Program, based at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa since 2010.

From January 2014, iMM has a dedicated PhD program - LisbonBioMed, (Lisbon Biomedical and Clinical Research PhD Program), allowing the recruitment of 10 PhD students per year, during 4 years. iMM also hosts students belonging to other national and international PhD Programs.

In pair with comprehensive high-level scientific training, we aim to provide PhD students with the right balance between close supervision and autonomy to create and develop their own ideas, as well as, between teamwork and independent work. We give particular attention to helping students identify their goals and tailor their professional paths.

PhD students are strongly encouraged to share their passion for science and other interests through various activities they organize (see PhD Students activities).

Lisbon Academic Medical Center PhD Program

The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL), the Santa Maria University Hospital (HSM-CHLN) and the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM) have come together to create the Lisbon Academic Medical Center - Centro Académico de Medicina de Lisboa, CAML (portaria n.o 1371/2009 de 27 de Outubro), a consortium aimed at integrating forefront scientific research with medical teaching and patient care.

Taking advantage of complementary resources and expertise, the three partner institutions, FMUL, iMM and HSM-CHLN, actively collaborated in designing an innovative joint Program: the Lisbon Academic Medical Center (Lisbon AMC) PhD Program.

The Lisbon Academic Medical Center PhD Program offers a uniquely stimulating environment and comprehensive training to promote scientific excellence, self-reliance, originality and critical thinking.

In parallel with research-centered training, students benefit from a varied curricular offer organized into thematic modules distributed along each academic year, and available throughout the full extent of their PhD projects.

We are looking for highly motivated and deeply committed candidates to conduct research projects within any of the following fields: Medicine, Biomedicine or Health Sciences and Technologies.

LisbonBioMed PhD Program

The Lisbon Biomedical and Clinical Research PhD Program (LisbonBioMed) provides privileged education and training to generate PhDs in areas encompassing the full spectrum of biomedicine, based on the principle that science informs and shapes medicine, while human diseases provide critical clues for basic biological research.

The LisbonBioMed PhD Program encourages young basic and clinical researchers to work together, and to apply and produce new knowledge in the interplay between laboratory and clinical practice, acquiring a unique skill-set to succeed in international careers within the broad scope of Biomedicine.

Each LisbonBioMed PhD student will be offered:

  • Privileged education at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), a leading European biomedical research institute;
  • Tailor-made curricular offer - following a common foundation module, courses are selected according to personal professional development plan.

LisbonBioMed is supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and is accredited by the higher education agency (A3ES). The Academic Degree is awarded by Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL).

Additional information may be found at LisbonBioMed.

Biology at the Host Microbe Interface PhD Program

Biology at the Host Microbe Interface PhD Program or INTERFACE for short, was created on the premise that understanding the general principles guiding host-microbe interactions is a major scientific endeavor per se with a potential global translational impact on therapeutic interventions against infectious as well as non-communicable diseases. The INTERFACE PhD program aims at fulfilling a current gap of knowledge at the interface of these multidisciplinary scientific areas.

The INTERFACE Program brings together three internationally renowned institutions in the Lisbon area, with strong proficiency in the field of host-microbe interactions: Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB NOVA), Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM).

Doctoral INPhINIT Fellowship Program

The Doctoral INPhINIT Fellowship Program, sponsored by ”la Caixa” Foundation, aims at attracting excellent young researchers, of any nationality, who wish to pursue doctoral studies in Spanish and Portuguese territory.

The program entails two independent frames with the following conditions for students coming to Portuguese Institutions:

  • Incoming: 35 PhD fellowships for candidates who must have resided in Portugal for less than 12 months in the last three years.
  • Retaining: 30 PhD fellowships for candidates who must have resided in Portugal more than 12 months in the last three years.

The doctoral INPhINIT fellowships offer a highly competitive salary and complementary opportunities for training on transferrable skills, temporary stays in industry, incentives upon completion of the thesis, among other benefits.
