Recrutamento de Células Sanguíneas & Inflamação

O nosso laboratório tem como principal alvo de investigação os processos moleculares e celulares que ocorrem entre as células sanguíneas e a parede vascular no contexto dos processos inflamatórios.

A parede vascular desempenha uma função fundamental no controle da participação e recrutamento das células do sangue na inflamação. A nossa investigação foca-se no estudo dos processos moleculares e celulares que ocorrem ao nível da interface sangue-parede celular no contexto do processo inflamatório. Com este objectivo, conjugamos abordagens de biologia molecular e celular com estudos de microcirculação recorrendo por exemplo, à microscopia intravital de alta velocidade em modelos animais in vivo.
Utilizando modelos animais de rato, ratinho e peixe-zebra, a nossa actividade científica tem como objectivo principal a compreensão dos mecanismos que governam o recrutamento leucocitário e a interaçcão celular na inflamação. No presente momento, estudamos a função de mediadores inflamatórios específicos na modulação da interacção sangue-parede vascular e os mecanismos que regulam o recrutamento de monócitos induzido pela acção do neutrófilo na resposta inflamatória. Adicionalmente, investigamos a função do eritrócito como componente sanguíneo pro-activo na inflamação.
Com base nestes estudos, colaboramos para o desenvolvimento de modelos teóricos de simulação de fenómenos que ocorrem ao nível da interface leucócito-parede vascular, particularmente em relação ao processo inflamatório.
Por outro lado, estamos igualmente a colaborar com uma companhia de biotecnologia start-up no desenvolvimento de novas metodologias para a determinação de parâmetros hemoreológicos.
