Alexandre Lopes has a Licenciatura in Physics and a MSc in Nuclear and Particle Physics from Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa. During his graduate studies, Alexandre worked at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics, studying the performance of event identification processes in proton and lead beams collision data analysis.

In 2020, Alexandre completed his PhD thesis in Engineering Physics from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, focused on the development of a mathematical protocol to simulate photothermal therapy delivered inside the tissue.

Alexandre joined the Advanced Imaging Facility at Gulbenkian Science (IGC) in May 2019 as Microscopy Assistant and Developer. Besides helping in the image acquisition and analysis of microscopy data, as a microscopy developer, Alexandre's work included developing two microscopes (a light sheet and an optical tomography, Arduino controlled) and developing GUI Java-based software.
