About the Bioimaging Unit

The Bioimaging Unit acts as a support structure to help and nurture research done with Light Microscopy inside the institute. Besides managing resources, the Bioimaging Unit provides iMM scientists and visitors with excellence in scientific know-how and expertise in using light microscopy methods for their research. We assist in planning microscopy-oriented projects, choosing materials and equipment, analyzing experimental results, processing acquired images and presenting data. Together with continuous training of new users, we organize regular courses to introduce users to the most recent microscopy techniques and foster interactions and collaborations between microscopy users at the iMM.

Team

Head of Unit

José Rino has a Licenciatura in Technological Physics Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico) and a PhD in Biophysics (Faculdade de Ciências). José has managed the Bioimaging Unit since January 2008 and was appointed Head in July 2009, after postdoctoral research at the iMM (Carmo-Fonseca Lab) focused on applying quantitative microscopy methods to study mRNA biogenesis. He is also Head of the Flow Cytometry Unit at iMM. Click here for more information.

Technical Support

Aida Lima has an Undergraduate degree in Biology and a MSc in Genetic Molecular Biology and Biomedicine from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Aida joined the Bioimaging Unit in June 2019, after studying the dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton in endothelial tip cells using confocal microscopy, in Cláudio Franco's lab at the iMM.

António Temudo has a Licenciatura in Biology and a MSc in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology from Faculdade de Ciências. António joined the Bioimaging Unit in June 2009, after studying the mechanics of somitogenesis in vertebrate embryos (mouse and zebrafish) using confocal live imaging for his MSc thesis. António has also studied Medicine at the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Services

The Bioimaging Unit is equipped with 2 inverted laser point-scanning confocal microscopes prepared for live cell imaging (Zeiss LSM 880 and Zeiss LSM 710), 1 lightsheet microscope prepared for water and clearing media immersion imaging (Zeiss Lightsheet Z1), 2 inverted spinning disk confocal microscopes with motorized stage, piezo and EM-CCD also prepared for live cell imaging (3i Marianas SDC and Zeiss Cell Observer SD), 1 multi-photon microscope (Leica SP8 MP), 4 fully motorized inverted widefield microscopes with cooled CCD cameras and incubators (Zeiss Cell Observer, Zeiss Axiovert 200M, Nikon Eclipse Ti and Nikon Eclipse TE-2000-E), 1 upright widefield fluorescence microscope with a CCD camera (Leica DM5000B), 2 fluorescence stereo microscopes with cooled CCD cameras (Zeiss Lumar V12 and Zeiss AxioZoom V16) and other imaging resources such as a brightfield microscope (Leica DM2500) and a bioluminescent imaging system (IVIS Lumina). We also have two high-spec computers for image processing available for researchers to work on their imaging data (Big Guy and Colossus). The Bioimaging systems are available on the online booking system for trained researchers 7 days a week and 24 hours per day. User training in each particular system is mandatory, even for researchers with previous microscopy experience.

More info on our
